Rajmachi Fort – A Trekker’s Paradise in the Sahyadris

Nestled amidst the lush greenery of the Sahyadri ranges, Rajmachi Fort is a haven for nature lovers, trekkers, and history enthusiasts. Located between the popular hill stations of Lonavala and Karjat in Maharashtra, this picturesque destination offers a perfect blend of adventure, natural beauty, and heritage.

The Rajmachi Trek spans approximately 16 kilometers, offering mesmerizing views, serene waterfalls, and verdant landscapes along the way. One of the highlights is the sight of the Ulhas River cascading through mountain gaps, creating a symphony of flowing water and chirping birds.

Perched at an elevation of 2,750 feet, Rajmachi comprises two historic forts — Shrivardhan (often called Shivadharan) and Manaranjan — standing tall as silent witnesses to Maharashtra’s rich past. You can also explore the nearby Kondhane Caves, known for their ancient rock-cut Buddhist architecture.

Itinerary

  • Board the train from Hyderabad in the evening/night.
  • Meet your trek lead at the station.
  • Seats will be allotted and a quick briefing will be given.
  • Pack your essentials, stay excited, and get ready for the adventure.
  • Arrive at Pune railway station in the morning.
  • Freshen up quickly at the station.
  • Travel from Pune to the Rajmachi base village (via Lonavala).
  • Breakfast stop on the way (authentic Maharashtrian food).
  • Start the trek from the base village — leave unnecessary luggage in the vehicle.
  • First stop: Kondhana Caves (easy 1-hour trek).
  • Visit the nearby Ulhas River (refreshing water body ~500m away).
  • Continue the trek till evening.
  • Reach Udhewadi Village (base of Rajmachi Fort) by night.
  • Enjoy local dinner prepared by villagers.
  • Fun games and rest for the night.
  • Wake up early (around 5:00 AM).
  • Start trek to Rajmachi Fort top (~50-minute climb).
  • Enjoy foggy weather, scenic views, and photography.
  • Return to Udhewadi village.
  • Have breakfast and rest briefly.
  • Descend back to the base village.
  • Travel back to Pune railway station.
  • Board the train back to Hyderabad.
  • End of the trip with beautiful memories and new friends.

Things to Carry

Clothing & Footwear

  • Comfortable trekking/walking shoes with a soft rubber sole (no slippers or sandals).
  • 30–40L backpack – avoid trolleys or suitcases.
  • Sleeping bag (optional: you can carry a thin blanket or bedsheet instead).
  • 3 pairs of quick-dry clothes – Wear one set on Friday night before reaching the station as you may not get a chance to change during the journey.
  • 3 pairs of socks (preferably quick-dry material).
  • Rain protection – raincoat/poncho, backpack rain cover, and zip-lock pouches for mobile and valuables.

Food & Beverages

  • Minimum 2 litres of water per person – bring reusable water bottles to avoid plastic usage.
  • Dry snacks & energy boosters – energy bars, nuts, candies, ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts), etc., to keep your energy up during the trek.

Miscellaneous Essentials

  • Government-issued photo ID (mandatory).
  • Camera (optional, for photography lovers).
  • Power bank to keep your phone charged.
  • Torch/Headlamp – avoid relying on mobile flashlights.
  • Personal medicines – if you have any specific medical conditions, inform the trek leads in advance.
