Rajgad is known as the “King of Forts” and is one of the most famous forts in the Western Ghats near Pune. It sits at 4,514 feet above sea level and is well-known for its rich history and beautiful architecture. The trek to Rajgad is a great way to enjoy the natural beauty of the Sahyadri hills along with exploring the old fort. The fort has three main areas called machis—Padmavati, Suvela, and Sanjivani—which show the clever design of the time. You’ll also find old temples, water tanks, and ashrams inside the fort.
From the top of Rajgad, you can see many other forts nearby like Torna, Lingana, Raigad, Sinhagad, and more. One interesting feature is the long snake-like watchpoints built with strong double walls, which helped defend the fort.
The trek starts from Gunjavane village. Begin behind Hotel Suvela Garden, and after a short 5-minute walk, you’ll reach the entrance gate to the trail. The path is clear and easy to follow. The first part of the trek goes uphill gently for 10 to 15 minutes, then you walk along Suvela Machi. After about 20 minutes, you’ll reach a big flat area where you get a good view of Rajgad Fort, Nedhe, and Suvela Machi.
From here, follow the trail to Chordarwaza, which leads to a ridge going to the fort. The last part is a steep climb over rocks. This was the back entrance of the fort, so there are no carved steps, but railings help you climb up safely.
After passing through Chordarwaza, you’ll find stairs that lead up to Padmavati Machi. When you reach the top, you’ll be greeted by amazing views of the Sahyadri hills. Keep walking to reach Padmavati Temple and its lake, a great place to rest or camp overnight.
At the end of Padmavati Machi, the trail splits into three. The path straight ahead goes to Balekilla, the main fort area. The left path leads to Suvela Machi, and the right one goes to Sanjivani Machi. From Sanjivani Machi, there is a short downhill walk to the exit that connects to the Torna Fort ridge, in case you want to continue your trek.
Rajgad is not just a hike but a journey through history and nature, with beautiful views, old buildings, and some exciting climbing.
