The Trek Route
The journey begins at Bari village, a quaint farming hamlet nestled at the base of the mountain. The initial stretch of the trail leads you through lush farmlands and vibrant green paddy fields—especially beautiful just after monsoon. You’ll cross a small stream near a Hanuman temple, which also marks the beginning of your ascent.
As you climb higher, the trail transitions into a misty forest and gradually becomes steeper. One of the most iconic features of the Kalsubai trek is the series of iron ladders bolted into the rocks to help trekkers navigate steep sections. While they may seem daunting at first—especially in foggy or drizzly weather—they add a thrilling element to the adventure.
After around 3-4 hours of trekking with short halts, you’ll reach a viewpoint often mistaken as the summit. But don’t stop yet—the final push takes just about 10 more minutes and leads you to the Kalsubai Temple, perched at the top and often surrounded by clouds. From here, you’re literally above the clouds!
Cultural & Spiritual Significance
At the summit sits the sacred Kalsubai Temple, dedicated to a local deity. Villagers from nearby areas trek up regularly to seek blessings, and the temple remains open year-round. The peak isn’t just about the views—it’s a place where nature, adventure, and culture beautifully intersect.
Itinerary
- Assemble at Secunderabad Junction.
- Board your overnight train to Kalyan Junction.
- Settle in, relax, and prepare for the adventure ahead.
- Arrive at Kalyan Junction early morning (around 6:00 AM).
- Quick freshen-up either on the train or at the station.
- Travel to Bari village, the base of the Kalsubai trek, via private vehicle (2–3 hour drive through Igatpuri and Bhandardara).
- Leave your main luggage in the vehicle and carry only essentials (water, torch, snacks, jacket).
- Enjoy lunch at Bari, followed by a short rest.
- Begin the Kalsubai trek in the late afternoon, before sunset.
- The trail starts with a gentle walk through lush paddy fields and a small stream.
- Continue through a forest section, leading to rocky terrain and the start of the iron ladder section.
- Cross 4–5 ladders, which can be slippery and challenging, especially in the monsoon. Take your time and enjoy the dramatic views along the way.
- Stop at a scenic viewpoint for refreshments and admire the views of surrounding forts and Bhandardara backwaters (weather permitting).
- A final climb brings you to the summit of Kalsubai, the highest peak in Maharashtra (1646m).
- Visit the Kalsubai Mata Temple, take in the cool winds, and enjoy the breathtaking scenery from above the clouds.
- Begin the descent after sunset via the same trail.
- Reach back to Bari village and enjoy a hot local dinner.
- Overnight stay in a cozy homestay or under the stars in tents (based on weather conditions).
- Wake up, freshen up, and have a simple breakfast.
- Travel back to Kalyan Junction by private vehicle.
- Board the train back to Hyderabad, filled with unforgettable memories and a sense of achievement.
